Teenage Duo from Springfield Jump into World of Real Estate

Springfield, MA — After high school most teenagers are trying to figure out what to do with their lives. Two teens in Springfield are already on that path.

At the end of 2021 Matthew Restrepo and Jordan Torres joined The Council Real Estate Group as licensed agents, ready to burst into the market.

They each have different goals in real estate and different things that brought them to the industry. What they share is a level of enthusiasm and energy that they’re eager to bring to clients. They simultaneously noted that, unlike other agents, “We don’t need coffee.”

A home of his own

Jordan Torres learned about real estate through an internship that started in February thanks to the Roger L. Putnam Vocational Technical Academy.

“I fell in love with the career, and I instantly knew this is what I want to do,” he said.

Jordan said his goal is to not only have his foot but his “whole body in the door” of the real estate industry, and to be recognized as someone who knows every aspect. Growing up, his family didn’t own a home, so he hopes to help others achieve their home-ownership dream.

“My main goal for real estate is to help people have what I never had,” he said.  He hopes that within the next few years he can achieve that same goal.

Right now, he’s actively searching for those who are interested in buying a home. Regardless of age, Jordan feels it’s tough for new agents to find clients.

Educating Others

When Matthew Restrepo was younger, he would create and edit videos for fun, scripting the content and developing interesting graphics. He now uses that experience to create brief videos to help home buyers. The 60-second videos on Instagram are entertaining and informative, describing closing costs, Chenoa Funds and how to improve a credit score.

Matthew hopes to shift his real estate experience into eventually owning and improving properties. Ultimately, he would like to develop and own parcels that can have a positive impact on the surrounding communities.

Putting knowledge to use is something that Matthew feels can separate him from the pack. “Every agent can provide every single thing that every other agent can,” he said. “I think what really matters is having a lot of knowledge and being able to share that knowledge in an elementary way.”

“Real estate in general is a pretty cool concept,” Matthew said. “I really like the concept of owning a piece of land that’s invaluable and they can’t produce more.”

Age is Just a Number

Communicating with and providing education to clients is important to both Jordan and Matthew. It’s having the knowledge and knowing how to share it with clients that they believe will set them apart.

Both new agents agree that they may have to work harder to prove themselves in a field of people who are older. They recognize that proving they have the knowledge base and communicating well with their clients is key.

“We really have to know what we’re doing,” emphasized Jordan.

Often the first reaction they receive when meeting new clients in person is a question. “Woah, you’re 18?” recounted the boys in unison.

Their age is not only an asset, but they acknowledged that they’re fortunate to know that real estate was a career option. Matthew noted that there are Springfield teens who aren’t aware of their choices for the future. “Sometimes we have to be really grateful for our position because we had the opportunity to have knowledge and know about these things,” he said.

“We were just blessed enough, and we were able to know about this opportunity (to become agents),” he added.
