Owner Goes to Lengths to Find Missing Dog in Springfield
Springfield, MA — A small, white and tan longhaired dog is missing in Springfield, and Felix Caballero is doing whatever it takes to find him.
Jacup is a half Jack Russel terrier, half Chihuahua approximately two years old and seven pounds. He normally has shorter groomed fur but by now it would have grown longer.
Caballero just wants his dog returned.
“Please call,” he said. “I’m lonely. I miss my dog.”
Jacup was last seen on July 27 near Springfield Fire Station Three on White Street in Forest Park. He was frightened and pulled out of his collar while a family member was walking him. Soon after the dog disappeared a thunderstorm complicated the search, particularly since Jacup is frightened by thunder and fireworks.
“I was so devastated,” Caballero said. “It was like I’d lost my best friend.”
Jacup is an emotional support dog for Caballero but also for his other Chihuahua mix, Lady, who has frequent seizures.
Caballero has posted signs throughout Springfield neighborhoods, coordinated posts on social media and the Stand Out Truck will be driving along certain streets with Jacup’s picture, posting a $5,000 reward for his safe return, no questions asked.
The truck has also been parked in certain locations while the family passes out fliers to raise awareness. Caballero chose the truck to keep the message noticed in the community. “I needed something that would stand out,” he said.
While combing the streets looking for Jacup, Caballero has been a guardian angel to other pups. Some were abused and sent to an animal rescue, one was returned to its original owner.
“If I find any dogs that need to be rescued while I’m out there looking for mine, I will,” he said.
Dead ends, false leads and people claiming to have found Jacup then not responding to a request for photos are some of the milder challenges.
“The stuff that I’ve had to encounter from other people is unbelievable,” he said. “It’s been so cruel.”
Children have called saying they have the dog and won’t return him and others have suggested that Caballero intends to harm his dog. It’s been heart-wrenching, especially when he simply wants his best friend to come home.
Jacup has some special characteristics, such as a buckled front right leg and right ear that folds down.
A $2,000 reward was initially offered but Caballero increased that to $5,000 in hopes that it would be enough incentive to learn Jacup’s location. He’s also offering a significant reward for reliable tips.
“I literally don’t know what to do. I don’t know what number could draw attention for someone to give up the dog. I’ve done everything I can,” he said.
Although he’s owned other dogs, Caballero hadn’t had as tight a bond with the others since losing a 12-year-old Papillon. Jacup changed that.
“Jacup was the one who would literally hug you,” Caballero said. “In my eyes someone has him and fell in love with him.”
He’s plagued by all the little things he could have done differently on July 27 that might have resulted in a different outcome.
“I say to myself how could God let something like this happen to me,” he said. “I never thought I would go through such a tough experience in my life.”
