A serious health scare convinced Martin Davis that he had to make some big changes in his diet and lifestyle. Now his mission is to bring healthy eating options to residents of Springfield with a juice bar, We Got the Juice.

Together with fiancé Sasha Solomon, they mix smoothies and wellness shots as a way to introduce healthy foods to locals.

“We opened it for the community to feel good and get healthy, and to offer better alternatives to fast food,” Sasha said.

Martin hopes that people will take advantage of their Springfield location, particularly during the pandemic. “Keeping immunity boosted is a big part of staying healthy and trying to fight this thing,” he said.

Smoothies and juices can be made to order or there is a full menu of choices; Green Goddess, Juice Four, Mudslide and frozen lemonades are among the most popular. Wellness shots provide a quick burst of vitamins. They also allow custom orders.

“They will hold you over until you’re ready to eat a nice well-balanced dinner,” Sasha said. “It fills you up and it makes you feel good. It gives you that little boost.”

The couple developed their own recipes, experimenting with ingredient amounts to get the right balance. Martin said that the menu will change seasonally as fresh produce is available and is looking to add recipes with pumpkin and sweet potato in the fall. Smoothies are made without dairy or artificial sweeteners. All smoothies are made fresh on the spot and never frozen or pre-mixed.

“It’s all about those live enzymes. That’s what’s going to ultimately help you,” Sasha said. “And it tastes good.”

“There’s so much you can do with fruits and vegetables,” Martin said. “There are endless combinations.”

It wasn’t until Martin began losing his vision nearly five years ago that he realized the importance of healthy eating. Doctors told him he was told he was close to a diabetic coma and needed to make some lifestyle changes.

“I was oblivious before,” he said. “I know now what I need to do to maintain my stability and my health.”

“I realized it’s basically what you put in your body that’s making you sick,” Martin said. “Energy-wise there’s a lot of stuff that comes from natural fruits and vegetables. You can find it all in herbs and fruits and vegetables.”

Sasha was having her own health challenges, so the couple began trying smoothies and juicing. It made them feel healthier which inspired them to extend beyond their own household to help others.

The Stand Out Truck parked in front of their business for their May 4 grand opening, letting passerby know the juice bar’s presence. Martin feels it helped draw people into the business, highlighting the location.

Eventually they would like to franchise to other locations in Western Massachusetts, extending healthy eating choices to more people.

Martin encourages people to spend time in the juice bar’s welcoming environment. They show movies, host live entertainment and have plenty of chargers for laptops.

We Got the Juice at 872 State Street is open Tuesday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
