Raising The Bar On Financial Literacy Amongst Minorities

Stand Out Truck Stories

Springfield, MA — Regina Hudson has a mission to help others find financial stability. She built her business, Hudson Financial Strategies, to offer financial guidance and education for families who desire to reach their financial goals.

It all began more than seven years ago when she worked in higher education helping families understand financial aid packages. That’s when she realized that many of them lacked financial understanding.

“A lot of people don’t understand that good financial health or financial investments will not only help their future but help their children,” Hudson said.

She first became certified to become a credit counselor before obtaining an insurance license.

“Life insurance in particular is something that’s not talked about enough, especially in the minority community,” Hudson said.

In 2018 she opened Hudson Financial Strategies to offer services like life insurance, will creation, and home and auto insurance. This allows her to give advice to families and help them plan for generational wealth - assets that are passed down from one generation to the next.

She recently received her real estate license and will be working with Executive Real Estate. Adding this new skill will help her better aid customers in planning for the future.

”Real estate and life insurance go hand in hand,” she said. “When you acquire more assets, you should get more life insurance to cover those so that your family can hold onto them if you pass away.”

By starting her own business, Hudson knew she would be able to continue her mission to help others rather than following someone else’s goals.

Hudson’s perspective is different than most leaders in the financial and insurance industry, which is a real benefit to her clients. Women represent fewer than one third of all managerial roles in finance while minorities represent only 21% according to the US Government Accountability Office. It means a lot to Hudson to be a representative leader, and being in the minority motivates her to do more for her clients.

Periodically Hudson offers free guidance and support through special events and speaking engagements. These events are announced on social media or her website. It’s a way that allows her to help people by sharing the knowledge she’s acquired.

“I like giving out the information because families need it,” she said. By doing that she knows it can make a difference in their lives. “I feel like I’ve really helped a family to obtain their goals and have a better future.”

One piece of advice Hudson offers to families is to set financial goals, something she notes is often planned for other objectives but not always in the form of a budget. “Knowing where your money is going can be helpful to achieve future targets,” she said.

Hudson also wishes more people understood the benefits of life insurance. “It’s one of the keys to building generational wealth,” she said. “Why are we working so hard, and not putting our families in a better financial position?”
