Local Educator Turns to Real Estate

Springfield, MA - Buying a home can be a challenging process. It’s something Shale Miller learned firsthand after buying two homes and selling one. She’s now a licensed real estate agent, bringing her experience to help others in the process.

During the height of the pandemic, Miller began to search for a career that would allow her more flexibility to spend with her three youngest children. She obtained her license online and began to explore ways to help her clients pursue a dream of homeownership.  After going through the process, she’s learned both positive skills and areas of improvement from past agents. It’s helped her to determine how she can be a stronger agent.

“The one thing that stood out to me is how we ought to treat our clientele,” she said. “The proverb, ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,’ that really stood out to me as how we treat people, and that will take you far in this industry.”

She’s also bringing her teaching skills into her new career. Miller has been an educator since 2008, most recently focusing on special education as an evaluation team leader. She plans to educate homeowners as a new agent with William Raveis Agency.

By using her educational skills, she hopes to provide learning opportunities for potential homeowners who may be nervous about the process. She said the some people don’t know the right steps to get to home ownership, but wants to help them feel comfortable making that decision.

Although Miller contends the change in careers is scary, she said she’s ready for the new challenge. She decided to advertise on the Standout Truck to build awareness as a new licensed agent in the community.

“I think people have always known me as an education advocate,” she said. “I’ll continue to answer (those questions), but now I’m just getting myself known in this new field so I can make that transition as I get new clientele.”

While Miller hopes to make people comfortable with the home buying process, she also wants to continue serving the community.  She is a former foster parent and is now licensed to provide care to disabled adults. She volunteers at the Springfield Rescue Mission, and prior to Covid assisted in a nursing home.

“I’m always looking to give back,” Miller said. “My heart is to serve the community.”

Children have always been a passion for the mother of six, so with real estate Miller can help them from a different perspective.

“I’m just shifting from education, still helping children along with their families to go into their dream home,” Miller said.

She believes that finding the right agent can be a challenge, but it’s worth searching to find someone who is relatable.

“I’m an honest person who understands the process,” Miller said. “With my experience in different backgrounds, I’m capable of helping people get into their dream home.”
