Affordable and Healthy Fast Food at Nala’s Kitchen

Finding food that’s fast and convenient is important for anyone with a busy life. Finding food that is also healthy is a bonus.

Nala’s kitchen serves fully-prepared meals designed with flavor, nutrition and health benefits in mind for both mind and body.

The meals early in the week have more vitamin C and D to give customers more of a boost. By the end of the week meals have more carbohydrates. Owner Rebecca Tuinei makes sure the ingredients are full of vitamins and anti-oxidants to improve mental function.

When she hears that people can reduce their medication because their conditions have improved after healthy eating, that’s one of the biggest compliments she can receive.

“You’re not just getting a regular meal,” she said. “There’s a little more background and creation.”

Tuinei balances meals in terms of taste, with the right amount of bitterness, sweetness and creaminess. “I call it the umami meal, to have a little bit of everything and hit all the flavor palettes on your tongue,” she said.

The foods are “heat and eat,” created to be reheated quickly with a wide variety of options and price points to meet any budget.

The menu has allergen-free, vegan, low-sodium or Whole 30 diet options. There are also Kosher choices through a partnership with Yosi Kosher Catering. By collaborating and combining their menu they’re able to serve customers throughout Connecticut. Another of her meal options are macro-meals, built with help from a competitive weightlifter. The high-protein, low-calorie options are smaller but filling.

It’s one of Tuinei’s passions to convert traditional recipes into healthy options. Her culinary degree is from Cordon Bleu with a focus on very heavy French cooking. She knew that she and others couldn’t eat like that every day, so found ways to enjoy the same flavors in a healthier way.

Previously Tuinei worked as a corporate chef assigned to St. Mary Home in West Hartford where she developed delicious meals for special needs, whether low sodium or special digestion. That’s when she created individual meals to help a friend build muscle. He brought them to work which intrigued his coworkers. Soon she was providing meals for many of them, and turned the experience into her own business.

The business is derived from her daughters’ names, Nina and Nola. She said that every time she says “NALA’s kitchen” it brings her happiness, love and cute memories.

Supporting female athletes is important to Tuinei, recently sponsoring the WNBA team, Connecticut Sun. It’s the first year she provided meals to the team so they could focus on practicing and know that they’re getting a healthy meal. The team was first in the WNBA and narrowly missed the championship game for the first time. Now she’s sponsoring two female mixed martial arts fighters.

She advertised on The Standout TruckⓇ to promote “fast food” meals from Nala’s Kitchen, which can be popped in the microwave and be ready quickly. The truck will be driving in areas with students and professionals with limited time for meal preparation.

“You can’t get any healthier and faster food in two and a half minutes,” she said.

She previously lived in Las Vegas and saw cheaper and less professional versions of truck advertising. When she saw the Standout TruckⓇ in person she was impressed by its appearance.
