Orange, MA — A lot of factors can impact business. Currently for recruiting company Balance Staffing, it’s a lack of workers.

“Our product is people. That’s as hard as it gets,” said New England Managing Director Lorie Miller. She started Balance Staffing 16 years ago and now has offices throughout New England.

“Right now, we’re looking for people who want to go to work. We have more jobs than people,” Miller said. “We’re suffering terribly.”

She tried radio and social media to entice employees, then had success by using Stand Out Truck. The truck is a digital mobile billboard that can easily be changed and adapted for a specific event or message. While the truck often drives through certain communities based on the audience, in this case it was more successful without moving.

“We parked it (Stand Out Truck) at a main sector of the street. We ended up with more candidates than we’ve had in months.
— Lorie Miller, New England Managing Director, Balance Staffing

The truck sat in an industrial park and directed people to visit a job fair. Free popcorn and hotdogs for potential employees were also advertised, along with encouragement to get a job before employment runs out.

The outcome was so successful that Miller said she’ll be utilizing the truck next week at a different location in Western Massachusetts.

“I can’t wait to see what next week brings,” Miller said.

Employers have an expectation that recruiters will find employees regardless of challenges. This makes Miller’s job exponentially more difficult. She said the manufacturing sector is the area that is most in need of employees.

“We’re in the worst staffing market there is right now,” she said. “That’s a huge struggle for us.”

Miller expects that the job shortage won’t last much longer and believes that many employees will begin to seek work again in September. That’s when unemployment benefits are expected to expire for many people and simultaneously children will return to school in-person in most communities.

“I think we’ll start seeing things change, but right now I’m having to be as attractive with everything I can just to pique someone’s interest,” she said.
