Springfield, MA – “Everything that’s made here, you can name the ingredients and know what’s in it. That’s how my mom did it, and my grandma did it,” Chef Sonya Yelder, Owner of Souper Sweet Sandwich Shop, commented as she continued peeling sweet potatoes in preparation for making her holiday pies. Formally trained in Paris at Le Cordon Bleu, Chef Sonya aims for flavors reminiscent of her grandmother and mother’s Southern cooking yet arranged in unexpected but delicious combinations.

A Springfield native, Chef Sonya thought back to summers spent in Georgia with her grandmother. She detailed watching her grandmother create meals made of the vegetables grown in her garden, meat made in her smokehouse, and fruits from the pecan, lemon, and plum trees she grew. And she worked diligently to bring that legacy of locally sourced, well-made food to the Springfield community, opening Souper Sweet in 2016.

Despite her classical culinary education, Chef Sonya offers a unique yet accessible dining experience. “I didn’t want to make food that people can only afford on special occasions. I wanted this to be a place where everyone I know can come and find a comforting meal.” With well-balanced, fresh-made sandwiches, mouth-watering soups, tasty salads, and treats that bring back childhood memories, Souper Sweet truly has something for everyone!

Even with a menu that changes weekly, the need to prepare fresh and flavorful offerings with identifiable and recognizable ingredients remains consistent. The meats for the sandwiches are roasted and cooked in-house, and the vegetable ingredients and bread are locally sourced. Soups are made from scratch, salads incorporate a diverse range of flavors, and desserts are freshly baked goods ranging from home-made oatmeal cookies to carrot cake, or a cherry-peach crisp to chocolate stout bread pudding. Even the beverages are locally sourced from Harmony Springs, an artesian soda maker in Ludlow, MA.

“I want to put together flavors that people aren’t used to being presented together. I hope to serve a unique, out of the ordinary, comfort food experience for every customer,” said Chef Sonya as she spoke with passion about creating satisfying meals for her diverse customer base. “I could shift my menu to more high-end dishes, but I want my food to be authentic and I’m committed to serving food that I actually enjoy.”
