Springfield, MA Juice Bar Showing Love for the Community & the Environment
Springfield, MA - “I always knew I wanted to open a smoothie bar from the time I was in undergrad, but I wasn’t sure how I would get started,” reflected Jazlinda Osorio, Owner of Cellf Juices Juicery, Springfield’s first cold press juice bar. “I started juicing after a trip to Honduras where I met Dr. Sebi, and spent a month learning about his work in USHA Village, in La Ceiba, Honduras. When I returned home, I was so impacted by the knowledge I had gained about the effects of food and fasting on the body, that I started fasting and juicing just for myself, and saw noticeable improvements in my health and overall well-being.”
When Jazlinda recognized the benefits she gained from juicing, she began to make her alkaline juices for other people, and it wasn’t long before her community started to see the positive impact as well. “I met Yanitza at La Belle Salon and gave her my juice – and she introduced my juices to her entire staff. I started selling the juices at the salon, and things took off from there! I found myself making in-person deliveries all over the greater Springfield area because more and more people wanted the juices.”
As her business continued to grow, people began asking her to make other kinds of juice that were outside of the “alkaline” juice fast list, but Jazlinda decided she was ready to do something new, making this healthy juice option more accessible to her community. For three and a half years. Jazlinda saved her money from working at a pharmacy, a part-time position with another business, and her on-demand juice sales, to be able to finally fulfill her dream of opening a juice bar.
A Whole Foods Plant-Based Nutritionist, holding dual degrees in Horticulture & Biology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Jazlinda is committed to helping individuals “heal on a cellular level”, encouraging a healthy lifestyle while caring for the environment.
The first juice bar location opened in Chicopee, MA in December 2019, and Cellf Juices clientele continued to expand exponentially into Western MA, CT, and RI. When COVID-19 came and restrictions and permit issues prevented her from taking customers in the juice bar, Jazlinda pivoted quickly, selling immunity booster juices and blends in the community. In the meantime, she found a larger space located at 1026 Bay Street in Springfield, where she could hold her spin studio, a larger kitchen, and, of course, Cellf Juices Juicery, which even boasts a drive thru window.
Yet the impacts of the pandemic continued to force Jazlinda, like so many other entrepreneurs, to find innovative ways to navigate the stressors that individuals and businesses are still facing in light of the uncertainty of COVID-19. “I’ve never cried so much in my entire life; this was one of the scariest things I’ve done. I quit my job in June 2020, and I struggled for a decent period of time, but help from the community came my way, as people like Betsy Lopez and her daughter volunteered to help me get – and keep – things up and running.”
With that help, Jazlinda started one of the first spin bike businesses in the area, and brought the bikes outside for social distancing, teaching 3 sessions per day, 7 days per week. She also created monthly juice order subscriptions to create a steady income while things were still closed. The new juice bar location finally got approved by the health department and opened up on December 10th, 2020.
Thanks to the hard work of the individuals who joined Jazlinda in her mission to help individuals embrace their health, Cellf Juices Juicery and the spinning studio, Spinning Adepts, are thriving. Full spin classes and a growing juice customer base are clear indications that the community is buying into the message of love of self and caring for the environment. “I went from not knowing if anyone would come, to partnering with people, and now customers and clients are coming in, and the juices are in high demand.”
And Jazlinda has maintained her commitment to running an environmentally sustainable juicing business. “My goal was to be independent, caring, and 100% responsible for what I’m doing. I’m responsible for all of the waste my business produces – so we have a good recycling program. We didn’t want to just throw away the pulp from the juices, so we donate all of our compost to local farms and gardens, and we are currently donating it to chicken farms. All of the bottles we use are recyclable, and we offer discounts to juice fast clients who return the glass bottles used for their juices.”
“Here at Cellf Juices, we heal on a cellular level, and we encourage love of self.”
