Elderly Care with Love and Compassion With Key Comfort at Home
Springfield, MA — Not just anyone can work for Key Comfort at Home. Owner Kiana Williams appreciates all of those who work in healthcare, but it’s more important that her employees have a passion for care-giving.
“We hire people who have a desire to care for seniors in a compassionate way as they age at home,” she said. “I look for the experience and the passion, and if they enjoy what they do and have that drive to care for others.”
Williams started Key Comfort at Home after working as a certified nursing assistant in a nursing home. It was a fast-paced environment and she found that seniors were sad because she wasn’t able to give them the time that they needed. “They saw me all day, but seeing me wasn’t enough,” she said. “They just wanted my time.”
She loved the work but wanted to be able to build relationships, so in 2019 she decided to open her own non-medical home-care agency employing others who are just as passionate about being a caregiver. While Key Comfort at Home hires nurses and CNAs, Williams’ goal is to ensure her staff all has a special place in their heart to care for others.
“Our caregivers are there to provide the peace of mind that they will provide the same care for a loved one and be a companion to these seniors who are aging at home,” she said. “We do it because we have a passion for it.”
Although some clients may bristle at the idea of someone coming into their home to help, she reminds families that it’s a way to promote their living alone and support their existing lifestyle.
“We’re not there to take away their independence, we’re there to help them maintain it,” Williams said.
The benefit extends to other family members, allowing them to relax and know that everything around their family member is taken care of.
“We want adult children to enjoy time with their parents when they come to visit,” she said. “We try to take the stress away.”
Key Comfort at Home’s around-the-clock services include personal care, health monitoring, mobility assistance and homemaking such as meal preparation.
The primary benefit provided by Key Comfort at Home is companionship, helping with small tasks, playing games and supervising activities. In a few weeks Williams will launch a virtual companion program with a maximum of 15 attendees. The program will be available four hours a day, five days a week. The virtual program allows seniors to connect, play games, participate in crafts and exercise together. Williams is planning to include activities like trivia, bingo, painting and live entertainment.
For any clients unfamiliar with Zoom or online communication, a Key Comfort at Home employee can help them register and teach the login process.
Although Key Comfort at Home is focused on seniors, they also offer care-giving services to any age group within Hampden and Hampshire Counties.
But it’s spending time with seniors and seeing their appreciation that is Williams’ true passion.
“A lot of people don’t realize the value of having a senior in their life,” Williams said. “As they age, they have so much knowledge and there’s so much value that lies within them.”
